Trying out methods for photography of insects in flight (9)
Flies that are not hovering are difficult to catch in flight because they are small and fast. This shot of a Nowickia ferox female (Tachinidae, Diptera) is blurred despite the shutter speed of 1/4'000 sec. Notice the position of the wings, the fly is negotiating a turn.
Flies are true flight artists, controlling their body position with the eyes and with the ancestral hindwings that are transformed into a gyrocompass. Some flies can cover great distances, some Syrphids cross the Alps every spring.
