Dostlarım, I would like to dedicate this "lifesaver" to our mutual friend Haraprasan Nayak, a nature lover, a good nature photographer also a fine soul who appreciates my mollusc shells!
My present post concerns the oral aspect of the test of the Violet Urchin, Sphaerechinus granularis, one of the most beautiful sea urchins of the Mediterranean/Aegean system. The round opening houses the chewing-scraping apparatus of the live urchin, a pentamerous radially symmetrical grouping of ever-growing teeth and the related skeletal system known collectively as the "Aristotle's Lantern", a term coined by Pliny, the Elder in the Roman times. The ten notches at the periphery of the opening are "gill clefts", openings for special skin foldings which serve as gills in the living animal. The small opening seen in the background, at the aboral pole of the test, houses the anal opening, surrounded by ten small perforations, the larger five of which are the genital pores, the orifices where the sperm or eggs leave the urchin, and the other smaller ones are the ocular pores, openings for specialised tube feet which can detect the illumination level where the urchin lives. The big, spherical risings on the test are articulation surfaces (mamillons) for the spines, which are short (1-2 cm long) and blunt in this species. Some smaller protuberances are also evident on the test between the mamillons, these are the articulation places for the pedicellaria batteries, tiny, three toothed appendages of the defence mechanism, highly poisonous but not strong enough to break the skin of humans, so quite harmless for us. The very small perforations in rows are the openings for the tube feet.
This fine specimen was collected while snorkelling from a sandy bottom at a depth of 6 meters, Ardı province, eşme/İzmir. A photoflood with double diffusers at one meter was used as a side-illuminator to enhance the sculpturings of the test, together with a contra placed white passive reflector, over a dark background.

Hi Mehmet,
Outstanding shot of this shill with such amazing details and patterns. The circular form looks beautiful and I like the perfect symmetry in design. Superb lighting and exposure levels and the black BG makes the image look marvellous. Surely Haraprasan would be happy about this dedication. Excellent POV and composition. Kudos.

Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Merhaba Mehmet bey,
Both the image and the notes make one forget the troubles of the world to endulge in ten minutes of enjoyment. As usual the image is superb, the POV allowing us to see the details of this sea-urchin's test with fine sharpness and good lighting.
When I was a young man in the Scottish Isles about 40 years ago on a bird-watching trip, I fished out a sea urchin from a rock pool and used my pocket knife to take out the edible parts to eat raw. The only taste I had was that of the iron from the knife blade! Needless to say little was eaten and I had to be patient with my hunger.
Thanks for sharing this fine image and the accompanying information,
Best wishes, Ivan

Simple composition but very sharp photo with very good details and interesting note. Nothing more is necessary as for me in nature photography :)

Merhaba dostum Mehmet,
Now this is what I call a real beauty.
What craftsman in the world could create such a wonderful and intricately beautiful object de art?
And to top it all, the colour of this creation is just out of this world.
And in photographing this precious piece, you have put to use the best of your technical and artistic faculties.
Your erudite note on the Urchin shell makes things very clear to a slob like me.
Thanks for sharing this amazing work of nature's art.

We have these in New Zealand too and they are called Ses Eggs or Sea Urchins. The Maori people call them Kina and love going and looking for them on the rocks and bringing them ashore and eating them.

This is a nice presentation of the sea egg Mehmet, with all its spines removed,

hello Mehmet,
Thanks at first for your kind comment on my picture.
What a collection in your gallery! Absolutely amazing. That's a great idea to present all these shells on TN.They are all well photographed and with the adquate note. Excellent didactic material. I have chosen this one for its very fine colour and patterns, but every single one deserves attention.
Un grand merci
Anne

Dear Mehmet,
This urchin is really fascinating. The photo has beautiful contrast and sharpness. I completely ignorant about urchins even if I collected some of them on Lesbos island recentely. I suppose this species is different than the commun greenish. I can see that the notches on the opening are smaller on the greenish one and the mamillions too. Thanks to share it! Best regards,
Catherine

My dear friend Mehmet, I somehow missed this shot!Nice to see you're back!Waiting for your inspiring work again! The details are very sharp and the note very informative, as usual!

Cuidada iluminacin, con unas texturas muy bien captadas.
Saludos Mehmet: Josep Ignasi.

Mehmed,
that image is magic. Brilliant details, finest shades of pale into deep purple, utmost concentration to the essence. A monumental piece of art that readily stands at one level with the sculptor and photographer Karl Blossfeldt's classical portraits of nature.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter

P.S.: Your gallery is outstanding. Like walking through a first class museum of natural history combined with contemporary art.

Hi, Mehmet,

many thanks for your comment and encouragement! you are right, you have a gallery of magnificent and beautiful natural structures and architecture : ) I like all your photos and I like this one most : ) I am not sure why, but this reminds me of Taj Mahal.

Thanks for sharing your masterpieces with me.

As someone who have studied architecture before (I got a degree in architecture before venturing into medicine), I certainly enjoy viewing the beauties in your gallery very much. thanks a lot!

Man Yee
