The story, or tale, here is the black tipped tail. It is one way to distinguish a mule deer (this one) from a white tailed deer. It is good to know, as most often that is the part of the deer you see as it retreats into the woods! If you happen to see one from the front, a mule deer has a black "V" shaped forehead marking.

I absolutely LOVE the colors in this shot.
Fantastic composition! What a tableau!
It looks like a painting. : )
Really good presentation of antlers, head, and... tail.
Very cooperative subject you have there.
Very clever title, BTW.
The BG is gorgeous.
TFS. : )

You handled this one fine Ev....Great real tones mixed in with earth tones..your discerning eye did the trick...as usual. Well cropped and framed. Much appreciated. I am always humbled by your fine technique!

Another beauty, Evelynn. I really love the details on the deer. But I think the bg is a lovely fall landscape to boot! I wonder if you had gotten just a tidge more DoF to try to ALSO make this a landscape if it would have been distraction from the perfect fg? (Though I'm sure there wasn't enough time to change the aperature in the field).
Mike
P.S. I think the crop on the bottom is just right (the fg blur seems to be taking over). But I think it says something about the "realness" of this shot that I feel myself trying to inch up in front of my monitor to get the feet in the frame. And the oddest thing is that I feel like I have to do it QUIETLY!

Evelynn,

That's one of the better shots of a deer I've looked at in some time. That is a great shot. Excellent colors, setting, composition but most of all I love how the deer stands out in this shot. TFS.

Best Regards,

Martin

Hello Evelynn,

This is a first calss photo of the deer. Everything looks natural giving to the viewer the feeling deer can be touched. There is an excelent sharpness you have shown the deer with. Every detail of the body can be sharply seen. Also the small bush and plants in fromt of the deer are shown in great sharpness. The blurry background enhaces this feeling.

Congratulations,
Cristian

Hello Evelynn

The setting is amazing, and the natural colours make it perfect.

Hello Evelynn,
Great title to a fine shot of a Mule Deer buck showing its white signal patch. The low POV is pleasing and the angle shows all the features with excellent sharpness against a neutral natural BG to make this a fine illustration of the species.
TFS, from a wintery Sweden.

Beautiful image of this Mule Deer buck Evelynn,
Wonderful lighting and exposure. This guy seems to be very relaxed and carefree at the moment.
Being from Ohio I've only seen this animal once when Rosie and I took a trip out West in 2000.
They are really neat to see running, they seem to have springs in their legs as they bounce away over the hillsides.

An Audubon painting, Evelynn. You have that talent with colours too, the background is simply superb to accompany this beautiful deer. I love the sharp grass and deer, with the rocks at the foreground, this is a beautiful composition. Thanks!

Hi My Friend,
As usual a magnificent image with outstanding composition, color and focus. He looks fat and sassy, great posting Evelynn.

Hello Evelynn
These animals amaze me, carrying this headgear all day long, every day and they always do it with such grace. I am sure that horns must weigh a few kilograms. This animal has lovely eyes, big ears, of course a lovely set of horns and last not least it has a great white backside, showing of whom he is or identifying him this way. This deer looks very relaxed and at eeze. It was very interesting to read about the tail part.
Warmest regards
Aaltjie and Hettie

Hi Evelynn!

This is wildlife at best! The picture is so beautiful! The position of the deer, the natural environment with the delicious colours, the whole composition... it's delightful! I also believe that the indirect light helped to get delicate, almost pastel and so natural colours.

Kind regards

Hi Evelyn
very nice image
very good sharp
well done.

Hello Evelynn,
Nice capture, beautiful natural colors, nice
light, good sharpness and excellent details.
well done.
Angela

Hi Evelynn,
this photo has a wealth of detail going for it and taken in a subdued light none the less!I like that dappled and watercolour like background so nicely blurred and yet has a wealth of information as to the environment this fellow lives in.He has a nice pair of antlers out of the velvet and the pose captured looks very good overall and as your note indicates, his tail is seen and being short he most definitely is a mule deer.I like these deer very much and a week ago today I had taken photos of a buck mule deer as well, but he had only one antler and was far from me at the time, which brings me to a question. The 1.4 extender that you use,how is it for hand held shooting of wildlife and for autofocus as some swear by them and others swear at them.I would like to get more range out of my gear would the extender in your opinion do the 100-400mm lens any justice or would I have to use a tripod full time with an extender? Thanks for giving us this photo to enjoy. Bob

hello Evelynn

an excellent shot of this Buck, with fine POV, DOF and framing,
i love the pose of the deer, excellent sharpness and details, TFS

Asbed

Fantastic image especially in terms of colors.
POV and DOF are outstanding.
I was a bit puzzled about the perching...on the frame. Despite the latter it must be said that the image is so good that this can be seen as the artist's interpetation..
A favorite...

Maravillosa captura de esta escena del mundo salvaje de Norte Amrica. Como siempre Evelynn, una sobria esteta. En esta obra en particular me encanta su casi bicromatismo de grises y verde limn.
