With marked increase in day temperature here in Jammu, wild life is getting visible. Today afternoon, a Ringed Parakeet perched on an electric cable in front my house for a short time. I quickly got my DSLR camera ready to shoot it. Sadly, my equipment, especially the camera body, in not functioning well anymore. This shot with 70-300mm is not my idea of a good picture.

The rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri), also known as the ring-necked parakeet, is a gregarious tropical Afro-Asian parakeet species that has an extremely large range.

The rose-ringed parakeet is sexually dimorphic. The adult male sports a red or black neck ring and the hen and immature birds of both sexes either show no neck rings, or display shadow-like pale to dark grey neck rings. Both sexes have a distinctive green colour. Rose-ringed parakeets measure on average 40 cm (16 in) in length, including the tail feathers, a large portion of their total length. Their average single-wing length is about 15ג€“17.5 cm (5.9ג€“6.9 in). In the wild, this is a noisy species with an unmistakable squawking call, and captive individuals can be taught to speak. It is herbivorous and not migratory.

One of the few parrot species that have successfully adapted to living in disturbed habitats, it has withstood the onslaught of urbanisation and deforestation. As a popular pet species, escaped birds have colonised a number of cities around the world, including Northern and Western Europe. Since the population appears to be increasing, the species was evaluated as being of least concern by the IUCN in 2012, but its popularity as a pet and unpopularity with farmers have both reduced its numbers in some parts of its native range.

Hello Ram Sir,

The photo might not be as sharp as one would have liked; nevertheless, its a nice one. The ring and other details are pretty much evident. BTW, Nikon D500 is a fabulous camera; the best in the cropped body DSLRs at present.

Thanks for sharing.

Warm Regards,
Satirtha

Hi Ram,the sharpness on the parakeet is excellent despite the distance,we can very well the details of the blue ring, while the background seems an abtract painting..hehe...well done! Have a nice Sunday and thanks,Luciano

Hi Ram,
my first reaction to this shot was, I am ashamed to say, to look for flaws. Please forgive me, it was in a spirit of learning from the others. But then I read your note and I realised how difficult it all was. So let me tell you how much I appreciated your careful note, added to the pleasure of looking at this beautiful parakeet.
Greetings, Dietrich
