Broad-shouldered Water Strider
|[Note Guidelines] הערת הצלם|
|Velia (Plesiovelia) saulii (Veliidae), a female.|
Size around 7mm.
This rare and colourful aquatic bug was found clinging to the floating leaves of last year's grass (probably Calamagrostis sp.) in a small but still deep enough brook well within the boundaries of my town. Pictures were taken at a very short working distance of a reversed lens with the strong risk of tumbling into the water from the steep shore with all of my equipment...
P.S., April 26, 2005. My ID was confirmed by Dr. Andrej Gogala. I recommend his site on Heteroptera of Slovenia (http://www2.pms-lj.si/heteroptera/index.htm).

I like the composition of this photo; colours orientated on browns.POV is excellent. Maybe a little sharpening would help improve it, but all else is spot-on
perfect capture of that rather unusual insect, taken under harsh conditions. Remarkably good details for the very small size of the insect, focus on spot. Perfect documentary shot with some action, well composed.
Thanks, and best regards,
